Abstract:
The text analyses varied manifestations of the theme of home in the emigrant prose fiction and essays of post- Yugoslav writer Dubravka Ugrešić. Special attention is paid to the continuity of particular variations as well as to the analytical-ironic distancing, which is typical of the writer and reflects her profound knowledge of world literature, culture, and myth. The most significant manifestations of the home topos, which are singled out for analysis, are: the home as a suitcase, the home as a train, the home as a prison, the underground home, the doll’s house, the residence for artists, the birdhouse, and the home as an egg. As the analysis demonstrates, all of these manifestations of the home topos are linked to the themes of emigration, exile, alienation, and absence under the “dystopian regime” of our times.
