Abstract:
Jaime Salazar Sampaio was one of the most significant Portuguese dramatists of 20th century. Influenced by the work of authors such as Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter and Luigi Pirandello, among others, he was the one to introduce the theatre of the absurd in Portugal. Solitude is one of the main themes in his plays. This paper examines the characters’ discourse, the time and space in the play “The Closed Runway” (“A Pista Fechada”) and their connection to the theme of solitude. Incorporating literary and theatre studies, this article demonstrates that solitude is a result of the complex situation that the characters are stuck in. A situation which is a consequence of the awareness of solitude itself, in the desert space and the timelessness.
