Abstract:

The present paper explores the significance of marine elements in the context of Ireland’s colonial history, focusing on the island, the coastline, and the Irish Sea as depicted in Charles R. Maturin’s novel, π‘€π‘’π‘™π‘šπ‘œπ‘‘β„Ž π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘Šπ‘Žπ‘›π‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘Ÿ. Employing postcolonial, ecocritical, and ecofeminist theories, the analysis aims to elucidate the connection between marine elements and the Irish national identity, and to highlight the novel’s contribution to the tradition of sea literature and Watery Romanticism.
