Lexical innovations in Dionysius’s translation of St John Chrysostom’s Homilies against the Anomoeans (part two)

Abstract:

Dionysius Divni, a student of Theodosius of Tarnovo and an associate of Patriarch Euthymius, is considered the most gifted translator among the representatives of the 14th-century Tarnovo Literary School. To date, however, no comprehensive lexical study of any of his translations has demonstrated this in detail. The article examines new meanings and lexemes, not attested in classical Old Bulgarian manuscripts, that the scholar from the Kefalarevo scriptorium uses in the Middle Bulgarian translation of St. John Chrysostom’s Homilies against the Anomoeans. Since Dionysius Divni’s contribution to the development of the Bulgarian lexical system is indeed enormous and as remarkable as his nickname, this study focuses only on lexemes beginning with the letter B.
