Abstract:

The object of the study is the set of phraseological units in the Bulgarian language that include the lexeme water, its synonym, or another word that verbally represents the element. The aim of the analysis is to identify the most characteristic metaphorical models in Bulgarian phraseology, using the concept of water as the source domain. The results show that the ambivalent nature of water is clearly reflected in the phraseologisms in which it functions as a source of metaphorization. Association with water helps make sense of both favorable situations for a person and the difficulties he may face, as well as the vain efforts he may make for something. In Bulgarian phraseology, abstract entities such as time, knowledge, and communication between people are also conceptualized through metaphorical comparisons with water.
