Abstract:
The paper focuses on an inscription from Odessos, which, due to its extremely fragmentary condition, has remained aside from the interest of epigraphic studies, its only interpretation proposed so far being the one of its first editor E. Kalinka. Considering the limited number of inscriptions which reveal the application of law in Moesia Inferior and the relations between the Roman authorities and local communities, however, the paper sets out to extract all possible, though incomplete, information about its contents. The linguistic and epigraphic analysis results in some additions to the existing interpretations of the document and in several new integrations to the text. Thus, the fragmentary text from Odessos seems to attest a conflict between two communities, which is arbitered by a Roman magistrate or the Emperor himself. The conflict concerns some contested things that have to be reinstated to the claimant or their monetary equivalent has to be paid back at their market price.
