Abstract:

St. Nicetas of Remesiana († after 414) is connected with Bulgarian history through the distribution of Christian preaching among the Thracian tribe Bessi. The main source for his life and work is Poem XVII of St. Paulinus of Nola († 431 ) which is an example of the “propemptikon” – poem for making one’s farewells, but at the same time it contains elements of praise (laus). For Paulinus Nicetas is already a saint and he is somewhat greater than the biblical characters; he is a winner of the passions. And his works are a result of his inner victory and its manifestation. The spiritual person causes love and attracts to himself. Before the arrival of Nicetas the Thracian tribes were wild and savage; now they are running towards the sky, chaste, humble, meek. “The happy turn” is described by many antitheses. The hope of second meeting between Paulinus and Nicetas is related to their gathering after the end of the earth life in the kingdom of the heaven. But the spiritual love could connect friends here too and his reunion starts already on the earth...
