Abstract:

The communication between a patient and a doctor means two-sided exchange of words with a common purpose- improving the diagnostic and the healing process. The main aspect we look at is the difficulties with explaining medical problems to the patients who have little or no medical knowledge. Although quite well informed the Bulgarian patients often face the difficulties of the specialized medical language, which makes the communication in the sphere of healthcare hard and unsatisfying. The reasons the aims in the communication are not achieved is the medical personnel’s lack of ability to choose an adequate language level and verbal means. The key to solving this problem is for the medical personnel to use various techniques in order to adapt the terminology to the patients’ level: translation, use of Bulgarian equivalents, and description of the terms using synonyms. The basis of the efforts for solving the problem should be set during the preparation of the students who have taken up medical subjects in the course Latin Language and Medical Terminology.
