Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to explore the morphological and semantic properties of the bound morpheme mikro- in Modern Greek and Bulgarian and its diminutive use. I indicate the ways of expressing diminutiveness (analytic, synthetic and the combination of the two methods). The issue of terminological variety is considered: there is a controversy concerning the nature of the bound elements and their status in derivational morphology. The categories of compound words with first element mikro- are specified as interpreted by Georgios Babiniotis. I point out the fact, that Greek has contributed a considerable number of international words of this type to multiple languages in the field of science and in particular in biology, botany, medicine, computer technologies and physics. These internationalisms have the same meaning and similar pronunciation and orthography. I examine the semantics, the formation of plural forms, the equivalence and the adaptation of loan Greek compound words with first component mikro- in Bulgarian language.
