Abstract:
The present paper has as its main aim to retrace the representation of the Neo-Babylonian “Cultic scene” on cylinder seals and their impressions on cuneiform tablets, mainly from the collections of three world museums. Analyzed are the monuments on which the scene is presented, together with its stylistic peculiarities and its diverse forms. Proposed is classifi-cation of scene’s variants, as also observations on different elements in the image. The research defines three main types, and seven variants of the “Cultic scene”, which are attested in sources. The classification is based on the correlation between the main elements of the scene – worshipper and altar with divine symbol. Additional observations are made on some problems related with the general and internal chronology of the motif and its variants during the Neo- Babylonian and Achaemenid Periods in Southern Mesopotamia.
