Abstract:

In 842 restrictive measures against Buddhists were undertaken in China. Responsible for this was mostly Li Deyu, the leader of one of the two inside palace fractions, who through various institutions carried out religious persecutions for years not only against the Buddhists but also against other cults, which he called heretical. A lot of measures against Buddhists and other alien religions were undertaken, first against Manichaeism. These measures included confiscation or restriction of the monastery property, physical attacks on entire groups of monks, bell melting, etc. Persecution intensified during the reign of emperor Wuzong in 844 and reached its peak in 845. All forms of popular religiosity, closer to Buddhism, were prohibited. The emperor issued two decrees under which all monasteries’ property, including the slaves, were made state possession and moreover noone under the age of 40 could become or continue to be a monk, nun respectively. This happened at almost the same time when the religios iconoclasm was a modern phenomen in the Byzantine Empire.
