Abstract:

This articles aims to rethink the available source information on the Persian “polis” Boryza in Thrace. By analyzing accounts from Aelius Herodianus and Stephanos Byzantinus who relay and sum up a passage from their prime source, Hecataeus, I have attempted at a historical localization of Boryza. According to the conclusions drawn, this Persian “city” (polis) in Thrace should be situated in the space between Salmydessos in the South and Cape Thynias (Ineada) in the North, on the Pontic Thracian seacoast. Future archeological excavations in this area of European Turkey would be able to substantiate or deny such thesis. I have commented the statement of Hecataeus that Boryza is a “city” (polis), and I also defend the idea that in this case we have to do with a Persian area of fortification, and why not a “royal fortress” similar to Doriscus at the Haebrus outfall. There is an attempt to situate in time this Persian area, as there is argumentation of the thesis that Boryza is created by the time of King Darius’ Scythian Campaign. The latest year suggested of the presence of Persian garrison in Boryza is 478 B.C., and here it is considered as terminus ante quem for the military Persian presence in Western Pontos. There is also an attempt to interpret the silence of Herodotus concerning the Persian area of fortification Boryza.
