Abstract:

Nicopolis ad Istrum was situated on the left bank of the Rossitsa river to the North of the present-day town of Veliko Tarnovo. It was founded by the Emperor Trajan. During the four centuries of its existence its population was a varied ethnic mixture in which the Thracian element was represented. There are necropolises all around the town. The northeastern necropolis consists of 20 tumuli. The northern one consists of 41 tumuli and majority of them are up to 3 meters in height. The southern and eastern necropolises were practically destroyed through agricultural activities. The greater part of the tumuli are placed side by side. They were probably piled up along roads leading out of the town. All data about sepulchral tombstones found in the mound necropolis of Nicopolis ad Istrum are gathered. There are two types of sepulchral tombstones – sarcophagi and stone graves. The sepulchral tombstones consist of rectangular gravestones, pyramidal monuments, semicircular epistyles and pedestals. The pyramidal monuments are found only in Nicopolis ad Istrum and they are not found in other necropolis of Roman period on Bulgarian lands. Probably the specific form has appeared as a reminiscence of Hellenic fower – mausoleum knoun from North Africa and Sicily. Inscriptions in old Greek and Latin languages are found on fifteen monuments and all od them date back from the second half of the IInd till the beginning of the IIIrd c.AD.
