Abstract:

The myth of Dionysus and the Thyrrenian pirates has come to us in eight complete literary versions. It is characterized by a comparative fixedness of the plot, narrated by the different classical authors. The divergences in the individual variants of the myth show up in the details which direct the reader to a certain type of rationalization of the mythological subject-matter. In discussing the authors’ texts on Dionysus and the Thyrrenian pirates the present paper dwells on some specific differences of the literary texts. These differences allow for two basic lines of rationalization: the myth can be analyzed either as an attempt to confirm the religious centers and rituals or as an inseparable part of the integral biography of the deity.
