Abstract:

***** are ancient Greek curse tables. They were used by the ordinary Greeks who passed the tradition of writing curse tables to the Romans under the name defixiones2. Many people in Ancient Greece believed that by using ***** they would be able to do harm. This paper tries to explain the meaning of *****. My research is based on the information found mainly in Plato and Apuleius. Faraone’s articles for the binding spells and curse tables were also quite helpful to understand the subject, as were the general conclusions for ***** made by Guarducci (Guarducci 1987, 370–377). Here, I try to explain how exactly those curse tables were made and what the ancient authors wrote about them. Covering the whole curse tables’ tradition is beyond the scope of this article, therefore I will focus on the Greek ones.
