Abstract:
As scholarly work has already revealed, when more specific food imagery in Catullus belongs to invective coarseness and may be intertwined with the themes like love, friendship, sex, poetry. This paper sorts out the references to wine, food and consumption, and examines their mostly negative connotations, stressing on the lack of positive parallels, i.e. standard sympotic representations of the “proper” way of sharing food and drink. In all six poems suggesting sympotic contexts, there is a reversal in one way or another, from hypothetic mode to shifting of roles and actions to failure.
