Abstract:

Cicero’s Palatine house was above all a glowing emblem of his coveted high social status as a consul – an embodiment of his auctoritas and his summa dignitas. When Cicero was reinstated from exile, his main goal became winning back his political influence. The first symbolic step was to restore his image by retaking his property. Cicero’s speech “De domo sua ad pontifices oratio” was so passionate in its singleminded pursuit of lost dignity that it became his masterpiece and achived a seemingly impossible feat. Cicero never managed to regain political power, but he succeeded in winning back his home despite a tremendous obstacle – the house had been already consecrated.
