Abstract:

Work motivation has a vital role in the development of organizations as it increases the productivity and efficiency of employees. To expand the understanding of individuals’ work motivation, this article examines the influence of individuals’ competence, autonomy, and social connectedness on it. In addition, culture-level moderating factors of these individual-level associations were examined. The findings show that autonomy and social connectedness have a positive influence on work motivation, while competence has a negative influence. Additionally, individual-level associations were moderated by country-level religious affiliation, political participation, humanitarian orientation, and in-group collectivism. In conclusion, contributions are indicated, incl. practical and directions for further research.
