Abstract:

The present contribution focuses on the problematics associated with the distinction between Divine essence and energies in contemporary Orthodox theology. It provides a brief comparative analysis of the theological systems of metropolitan John Zizioulas and Fr. Dumitru Staniloae. Metr. Zizioulas is one of the Orthodox theologians who developed a theological system that does not employ the distinction between Divine essence and energies. On the other hand, Fr. Staniloae could be considered as a theologian of the Divine energies par excellence. The analysis suggests that the attempt to minimize the role of the teaching on the distinction between essence and energies in Orthodox theology leads to a narrower understanding of spiritual life and of the Church in general. The difference in the two approaches defines a methodological framework that could be further elaborated in future studies.
