Abstract:

Studying the development of the early Church, and the rise of the School of Alexandria in particular, one can observe the dying away of the eschatological spirit which was so characteristic of the first two centuries, and the discovering of the road to perfection which was opened up for all Christians – in the present – in the spiritual life dedicated to the vision of God. On the other hand, there was also another trend in this period, for what had been received from Jesus to be mixed with elements of pagan wisdom. One of the originators of this ‘philosophical spirituality’ was the representative of the School of Alexandria, Clement of Alexandria. The present article examines Clement’s attitude towards theology and philosophy, and the way to reach the vision of God. In what way the significance of the vision of God makes an impact on the life and thought of the Church? Clement’s writings invite us to a dialogue which seeks the truth that unites us, a dialogue in which we are all invited to take part.
