Abstract:

The Christological views of apostolic men stem directly from the oral tradition and from the experienced life of Christ’s body in the holy Lord’s Table, and in the world. For the writers of that age, Jesus Christ is an embodiment of the Son of God who came into the world to assume the sins of the believers in Him, and by joining with Himself to open the way to the kingdom of God before them. Some of these writers (Barnabas, St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Polycarp of Smyrna) place a strong emphasis on the Incarnation of Jesus Christ in polemics with the emerging heresy of Docetism. Whether the Christian ideas of apostolic men are expressed either directly or through allegorical images, in all works they reflect the church doctrine of the divine and human nature of Jesus Christ and his participation in God’s economy.
