Abstract:

The period between the two world wars is key for the development of Bulgarian fine art and culture. Bulgaria, as part of the Balkan countries, is in the process of searching for its place in the European cultural environment. The object of study in this article is our national identity and the authors’ ways of expressing our cultural identity. Bulgarian artists address the theme of the native in art, paying particular attention to folklore, the life of the people, Christian traditions, and national values. This article pays particular attention to Bulgarian graphic artists – representatives, art, and contribution to the development of Bulgarian graphics. Emphasis is placed on specific authors such as Vasil Zahariev, Veselin Staikov, Elka Zaharieva, Sidonia Atanasova, Liuba Palikarova. From what is presented in the article, one can deduce the main theme of Bulgarian graphics in the mid-1920s, as well as the authors who contributed to the development of the theme of native art.
