Abstract:

The late 1950s and early 1960s marked the beginning of attempts to decentralize Bulgaria’s cultural life and expand artistic activity beyond the capital. In this process, the city of Burgas played a significant role, rapidly establishing itself as one of the country’s major cultural centres outside Sofia. The development of its theatre and the growing interest in innovative artistic practices created favourable conditions for the advancement of the visual arts. Burgas became a venue for presenting the work of leading Bulgarian artists and, in 1959, hosted the first national art exhibition organized by the Union of Bulgarian Artists outside the capital. A significant contribution to this initiative was made by the Burgas branch of the Union. The exhibition was initially presented under the title Friends of the Sunny Coast and, from 1968 onwards, became known as Friends of the Sea, a name that has been retained to the present day. As one of the earliest periodically organized national exhibitions outside Sofia, it reflected the increasingly active role of the Union of Bulgarian Artists and its regional structures in shaping the country’s artistic life. In the following decades, similar collective art exhibitions were established in regional centres throughout Bulgaria. These exhibitions, under different titles and with varying formats, contributed to the decentralization of artistic life, providing opportunities for artists to present their work and enabling the comparison and exchange of artistic achievements within the broader context of Bulgarian art.
