Abstract:

This article explores the art gallery as a space of contemporary cultural pilgrimage, examining the transformation of the artistic institution into a locus of symbolic experience and ritual participation. The relevance of this research lies in reassessing the gallery’s role within a globalized and digitalized society, where cultural consumption becomes a form of identity and spiritual quest. Within art criticism, this topic has been only partially addressed through concepts such as the white cube, the aura, or relational aesthetics, yet rarely from the anthropological perspective of the visitor as a pilgrim. The study aims to demonstrate that the contemporary gallery functions as a liminal space between the sacred and the profane, where aesthetic experience acquires ritualistic and communal characteristics. The methodology combines interdisciplinary theoretical analysis (aesthetics, anthropology, visual sociology) with a comparative case study approach, focusing on both international institutions and Romanian contexts. The innovative aspect of this research lies in applying the concept of cultural pilgrimage to the art gallery, integrating notions of the sacred and collective experience into contemporary art criticism. The study’s implications point toward a reconfiguration of the institutional role of the gallery, highlighting its formative and identity-shaping function in a world increasingly defined by mobility, digitalization, and cultural interactivity.
