Abstract:

Evgeniy Kurdov, an artist from the recent past, and his abundant work have not been sufficiently researched. Kurdov lived and worked in his hometown, Sliven, and left a deep mark in the cultural history of the city, thus taking his rightful place among the Bulgarian artists of the twentieth century. He studied sculpture at the Art Academy in Sofia, but worked primarily in the field of painting and graphics. His paintings fit in the genres of portrait, landscape, cityscape, still life and figural composition. He developed his own distinctive style leading to remarkable achievements in the picturesque depiction of nature and his hometown, as well as in the emotional impact of portraits. Kurdov turned to graphics at a more mature age and worked in the linocut technique, leaving behind a rich collection of graphics. His themes range from portraits of famous Bulgarians to depiction of significant historical events and legends. They are recreated with epic generality and expressive graphic style. The artist’s entire work is multi-layered and his role as a person, colleague, and teacher is significant.
