Abstract:

This paper focuses on the points of contact between art and sociology and on their seemingly amusing game of chase. This game sheds light on the author’s reflections on the social theme in painting and on its role. Although sociology does not arrogantly claim to have unravelled and deciphered art (I exclude vulgar theories), it confidently directs its searches and analyses in the direction of apparent curiosity towards the social marks in works of art. However, we must not forget that the blood of a conqueror is what flows through the veins of the sociological organism. Art for its part, sacralizing its autonomy, hides behind the immanent slogan “l’ art pour l’art” and thus draws a dividing line that practically changes the rules of the game.
