Abstract:

This article is a critical review of the entire career of Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore from his 1986 debut, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑜𝑟 (𝐼𝑙 𝑐𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎), to his last film to date, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 (𝐿𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑧𝑎), from 2016. We follow his main thematic choices and preferred formal techniques during this period to highlight some of his most noteworthy aesthetic achievements – the additionally significant subject environment, the visually layered narrative, the implicit mechanism of suggestion, and more. Furthermore, we pay attention to the unconcealable fluctuation between the originality and predictability of his style, between the well-thought-out idea and the more unpretentiously ordinary results.

Keywords:
