Abstract:

The text systematizes the creative and theoretical work of Atanas Totlyakov from 2011 to 2024 (with a retrospective after 2006), devoted to “radical tactile poetics”—a concept that positions touch as equal to (and sometimes leading over) vision in art. This text provides a brief definition of radical tactile poetics, which is conceived and carried out as an ongoing process based on the tactile perception of the world. In its most synthesized form, some key moments related to the discussed topic are theorized. The development of the idea is traced chronologically, with possibilities laid out for its enrichment and reconsideration from both conceptual and technical perspectives. Specific works are systematically categorized, with an emphasis on the sustainable updating of cognitive and creative intentions in relation to tactile and kinesthetic sensations. The technical parameters of the presented works, as well as the methods used to create them, are described in detail. The focus of the research and artistic intent is on building interconnections between individual works and the generated situations. The discussed individual artistic practice is accompanied by theoretical reflection. Important forums for promotion, such as exhibitions, installations, performances, and public lectures, are thoroughly reflected upon. Several approaches for creating and presenting tactile works are outlined, all stemming from the empirical experience of the creative act in the spirit of embodied consciousness within the environment, thinking through and with the material essence of things.
