Abstract:

This report presents the theoretical basis, organization and methods used in a survey of Literacy readiness in teaching English as a foreign language in Bulgarian primary schools. The main goal of the diagnostic procedure is to find these elements of Reading comprehension that are most difficult for students from the 2nd grade. Our hypothesis is that if we outline the elements of Reading comprehension that are most difficult for students from the 2nd grade, we will be able to back with arguments some educational priorities and to consider deliberately some effective methods of teaching Reading comprehension. The diagnostic model is designed as a complex of criteria, indexes, indicators and a test. A hundred students from the 2nd grade did the test. Three levels of rate were used to assess the Literacy readiness. The results are displayed on charts and diagrams according to the accepted criteria and indexes and separately, task by task. A detailed analysis of research data gave us the opportunity to distinguish the elements of Reading comprehension that are most difficult for students from the 2nd grade. We drew some inferences and conclusions that could help us to design useful exercises for preventing/overcoming Reading difficulties.
