Abstract:
The paper presents results from a study with Roma, Bulgarian and Turkish kindergarten children. Two groups of children are investigated – Experimental group (EG) and Control group (CG). With the children form the EG once per week Romani language lessons were organized and with the children from KG these kind of lessons were not organized. Both groups of children were tested at the beginning and on the end of the experiment. At the beginning both groups show the same resultsmuch higher knowledge in Bulgarian and very little knowledge in Romani language. On the end of the experiment the children from EG show much higher results in Romani and in Bulgarian and the Bulgarian children have positive attitudes towards Roma children. In KG the results on the end of the study are the same as at the beginning. The importance of Romani language as a mother tongue is very important, because it shows the cognitive development of the bilingual children.
