Qualities of High School Principal

Abstract:

Study focused on selected Bulgarian and international research findings related to personal qualities and leadership behaviors of high school principals is presented.Number of requirements toward educational institutions’ leaders, including those of high schools, is summarized and systematized. Empirically based study with a pool of 167 teachers and 166 parents of high school students aimed at identifying of high school principal’ qualities has been organized. Major findings and conclusions derived from the study show that high school principal is expected to perform the role of catalysts, to inspire, stimulate, orient and create appropriate climate in order to develop creative potentials of the entire pedagogical community. According both study groups (teachers and parents) efficiency and effectiveness of the school principal leadership role are predominantly based on his business and personal qualities. Parents view the stability of principal’s goodwill and the level of his/her sociability as very important. Major research finding is that required personal preconditions for the school principal are in fact qualities representing organic interrelation of psychological processes and conditions, which ensure optimal professional contacts and communication, and play a role of necessary circumstances for implementing and further development of the institutional goals.
