The article deals with a little-known problem in Bulgarian historiography. German plans to resolve the Macedonian question pass through the desire to guarantee the right to self-determination. The Germans do not see Macedonia as part of the Bulgarian national interest. For them, the district is an essential economic resource. Their views are based on the population censuses conducted in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1921 and 1931. The appearance in these tables of the area “Macedonia” and of “Macedonian people” made Berlin change its concept. In the 1930s, the main counterpoint was the cessation of the influence of the Comintern in the Balkans. The Germans’ idea was to create a Macedonian confederation. In this idea, the Bulgarian element in the region and the Bulgarian national interests are not taken into account. This is clearly evident from the ethnographic maps that have been prepared. The attempt to resolve the Macedonian question is being made to the detriment of Bulgaria
