Abstract:
The debates among scholars, concerning the question of where Old Great Bulgaria was founded, have continued for a long time. What is unquestionable is the fact that the main written sources about that issue are those of Theophanes and Nikephoros. The Kuphis River, which turns out to be the most important clue of the state’s whereabouts and which is mentioned by both Byzantine writers, has so far been identified with the Kuban River in the Caucasus. In the current article, we identify the Kuphis River with the Ingulets River in the territory of present-day Ukraine, bearing in mind the available historical and geographical data and evidence.
