Abstract:
The inscriptions from the Holy Forty Martyrs Church in Veliko Tarnovo have been known to the scholarly community for over 150 years. Ever since the middle of the 19th century the legend about the formation of the Old Bulgarian capital, preserved among the citizens of the medieval Tarnovo, is not only known, but also published. The information from the inscriptions has been accepted by some with a complete distrust and to the legend about the formation of Tarnovo no serious attention has been paid even to this day. A new reading over the familiar texts, supported with new interdisciplinary arguments, coming from the already well-known data from the archaeological research, architectural analyses, the geographical models, the mathematical calculations, the folk stories and others carried out to this moment, gives a temporary, logical, satisfying and clear answer to a number of debatable questions, connected with the Tarnovo stone inscriptions. The giving of an answer to the questions about the place of Tarnovo in the First Bulgarian Kingdom, the time of the construction of the present-day Holy Forty Martyrs Church and about its “building from the ground up“ during the rule of Tsar Ivan Asen II sheds new light on the role of “The Great Church“ in Tarnovo. Last but not least it also gives a well-grounded and acceptable answer to the question which were “the old home“, “the new home on the River Danube“ and “the all-glorious mound“ and where they were situated. The “all-glorious mound“ was situated between “the old home“ and “the new home on the River Danube“ and they were all built by Omortag.
Keywords:
Tarnovo, the Great lavra, the old home of Khan Omortag, the new home on the River Danube, the all-glorious mound.
