Abstract:

The aim of this article is to present the clinical picture and diagnostic specificities of paraphrenia and persecutory paraphrenia. Paraphrenia can be defined as a chronic psychotic disorder resembling paranoid schizophrenia, but with better preserved affect, the ability to maintain interpersonal relationships, and relatively mild personality degradation. We believe that paraphrenia has not lost its relevance as a distinct diagnostic category, and that it should be included in the new revisions of the International Classification of Diseases and of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This would improve scientific and clinical research, as well as psychiatric treatment and care of patients with paraphrenia and schizophrenia.

Keywords:

paraphrenia; persecutory paraphrenia; paranoid schizophrenia; delusional disorder; atypical psychosis; dementia praecox.
