Abstract:

This article examines the potential of multiculturalism policy to address Britain’s complex political situation and aims to critically assess the disharmony between state policy and social reality. Despite the development of a system of measures aimed at supporting national minorities, the state policy of multiculturalism has not functioned productively in the country. The article highlights the lack of coherence between legislative decisions and social attitudes within society, as the latter are dynamically changing. The alleged ‘retreat’ from multiculturalism in the United Kingdom is associated with the lack of social cohesion and escalating tensions among diverse societal groups, rather than real changes in the national policies. Particularly noteworthy is the prevailing perception that multiculturalism itself bears responsibility for these challenges.
