Abstract:

The paper deals with the so called relay questions – interrogative sequences formed by occurring of more than one interrogative utterance in a close proximity. The study discusses the structure, semantics and function of those sequences in spontaneous daily speech. The use of the relay questions is motivated by the specific conditions of a communicative situation and the strategies for achieving communicative goals.
