Pragmatic Functions of Modal Adverbs in Colloquil Speech

Abstract:

Modal adverbs such as naistina, vjarno, neverojatno etc. are lexical means which express the speaker’s attitude to the truth of the proposition indicated in the statement. In this paper it is assumed that in addition to modal functions which these adverbs perform, they have pragmatic functions too. Pragmatic functions are related to the communicative purposes of the statement.
