Abstract:
Against the background of a general lack of consensus regarding the definition of ‘wordplay’, the present study aims to outline a terminological and conceptual distinction between the ‘fuzzy’ concepts ‘language play’, ‘wordplay’ and ‘pun’ and to describe their hierarchical relations. A working definition of ‘wordplay’ is provided which takes into account not only the linguistic but also the cognitive aspects of this interesting phenomenon.
