Abstract:

The method used in this study divides the Bulgarian lexemes with non-Slavic, Proto Bulgarian or suspected of Proto Bulgarian origin into two groups. The first group contains words representing unproductive language isolates. The second group includes productive words that build separate semantic clusters, each one with its own semantic root and etymology. Language isolates of the first group all have Altaic origin. The semantic roots of the enlisted 12 semantic word clusters all have Eastern (Iranian, Indo-Iranian, Mesopotamian and Dravidian) etymology. Some of the words from the later semantic clusters are also found in many Eastern European and Slavic languages as language isolates. These facts cast doubt on the notion that these eastern words are borrowed from the eastern Iranians during ancient Slavic times. They substantiate the hypothesis for the important role of Proto Bulgarins as donors of these words into the First Bulgarian kingdom state language that later became an official language of many newly found Slavic states. This hypothesis is consistent with the modern notion, based on archeological and historic data, for Proto Bulgarians as possessing prominent elements of eastern origin in their culture.
