Резюме:

One of the main targets of education in the contemporary reality is the preparation of capable and thinking individuals, achieving successful realization in the dynamically changing global world. Geography has a big potential for the formation of such key competences by involving the students as an acting part of the educational process. Acquiring geography and economics as a subject gives an opportunity for gaining a very wide range of skills, building positive attitudes and revealing interdisciplinary relations. The present statement is focused on studying the Balkan region which is significantly important for the development of Bulgaria, and reviewing opportunities for gaining more profound knowledge about the region within the framework of profiled geography and economics training in secondary school education. On the basis of an overview of the current curricula, an analysis of the laid potentialities for the acquisition of specialized geographical knowledge is made, with an emphasis on the competences, positions and attitudes which are formed in the young people towards problematic issues of a regional and global scale. An account is taken of the need of greater concentration of efforts in the course of profiled training, not only on the part of instructors but also on the part of students. A more indepth grasp of the theoretical and practical achievements of geography as a science is gained and the work is in the direction of the formation of geographical knowledge on a higher level.
