Intercultural communication is a multidimensional process, guaranteed by the knowledge of the conceptual meaning of words as well as their cultural connotations. This turns the research interest to basic concepts, whose specific interpretation by the bearers of different cultures could lead to mutual misunderstanding. The paper examines two concepts MAN and WOMAN in the Bulgarian language based on an analysis of comparable data from free language associations of Bulgarian and Polish speakers. The main conclusion is that the Bulgarian image of a man, respectively of a woman, corresponds to two Polish concepts – physiological gender and social status, and that the Bulgarian concept is dominated by the notion of physiological sex.
