Резюме:
The paper discusses unit and section headings in LIFE (a series of English textbooks for foreign learners). It focuses on the functions, meaning and structure of headings. The findings of the study are related to the fact that headings combine the representative function of language with some of the other functions of language; their meaning can be literal, metaphorical or idiomatic; the complexity of their structure varies from noun phrases and non-finite structures to sentences of manipulated word order. Creatively used, headings stimulate the development of learners’ linguistic and communicative competences.
