Abstract:

One prominent feature of the historical development of the Bulgarian language, which assigns it a more special place amongst other Slavic languages, is the fate of the old infinitive. Substituting the infinitive for a subordinating да-construction has had an impact on the temporal-modal system of Bulgarian. Its fate is not dissimilar in all four languages constituting the Balkan language sprachbund – Bulgarian, Greek, Albanian, and Romanian, which is the reason to view the phenomenon as one of the pronounced Balkanisms in their morphosyntax. In modern Bulgarian, forms of the abbreviated infinitive have been preserved, while in some more archaic dialects, use of the full infinitive can be witnessed even today.
