Abstract:

The article discusses superlatives found in Hexaemeron (translated by John the Exarch), where the formant нAI- has been added to adjectives in comparative and positive degrees . The reported examples, which are predecessors of the contemporary analytical superlatives, shift with a few centuries earlier the dating of the earliest 14th century forms of the kind, familiar until now. The examples from Hexaemeron reveal that the process of shaping up the formant нAI- as a means of expressing the superlative degree in adjectives was on its way in the north-eastern Bulgarian regions as early as the beginning of the 10th century.
