Abstract:

The first part of the paper provides a short description of the so-called jeans fiction, i.e. literary model known in the Bulgarian literary science as infantile fiction. Aleksandar Flaker in 1974 defines jeans prose as a model that has its paradigm in Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, and whose main characteristic is the intelligent, adolescent hero who confronts the adult world, especially through specific use of language. The second part of the paper points out the main flaws of Flaker’s study – he does not determine whether Salinger’s novel has influenced the development of other literary works, or is simply the first representative of this model; it is unclear which works of Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian literature could be classified under the jeans fiction category; and finally, it’s unclear whether this model has perished or still lives in the XXI century.
