On the Unusual Epitaph of Allia Potestas
Authors:

Pages: -
Abstract:
The paper analyses one of the longest and most complete of epitaphs dedicated to a woman. It presents a perfect synthesis of the most frequent topoi of funerary poetry, the essential motifs in praise of a woman, and elements proceeding from classical literary models (principally Ovid); alongside these, the author has incorporated certain elements from daily life; all of which paints this portrait – literary and at the same time true to life – of a real woman of flesh and blood, a canvas full of informative details, specific and personal, of incalculable documentary value.
Keywords:
epigraphy, epitaph, funeral poetry, polyandry, eroticism, praise.
