Abstract:

The paper examines the reception of Bulgarian literature through its translation within the Czech context since 1989. The processes are investigated in several important aspects: chronological, generic and from the perspective of the relationship of classical vs. contemporary literature. Two distinct stages emerge from the analysis. The first one covers the 1990s and is marked by a discontinuity of the reception, a drastic reduction in the number of translated works and fragmentary critical reflection. The second period starts at the beginning of the 21st century and is characterized by a gradual recovery of the intensity of reception, a rising number of translated works and a deepening seriousness of the critical readings. The study outlines the typology of the presence of contemporary Bulgarian literature in the importing foreign context and formulates models of its critical reception. It identifies the emphases dominating the readings of Bulgarian literary texts and the contexts into which Bulgarian authors and their works are most often inscribed. The exploration leads to the conclusion that during the period under view and within the Czech context the perception of Bulgarian literature is governed by the stereotypical image of a “small” literature.
