Abstract:
The paper discusses some of the imagological tendencies observed in the creation of images of China during the twentieth century. The text consists of two general parts. The first part focuses on the imagological construction – by various authors – of Chinese people living abroad in the first half of the century and on Sommerset Maugham’s travelogue On a Chinese Screen. In the second part of the paper I discuss images created in the second half of the century, after the creation of the People’s Republic. I focus on texts by two writers who travelled in China – Colin Thubron’s Behind the Wall: A Journey through China and Peter Hessler’s article “View From the Bridge: North Korea Through a Chinese Looking Glass”.
