Abstract:

Oikonyms constitute an important information source for the historical and ethnographic study of a specific territory. The data of oikonymy are properly justified only under the condition of a comprehensive study. The system of regional oikonyms is a valuable source for the study of historical (intra-linguistic and extralinguistic) processes that took place in this territory. The oikonimiya of Azov, as well as of the whole of Ukraine, was formed in the process of complex historical development. For many centuries of their stay in this territory, numerous tribes and peoples left their names, connected not only with the natural and clиimatic conditions and economic life, but also with certain historical events. A large number of Bulgarian elements are represented in the toponymy of Azov, and to a greater extent in oikonymy, i.e. names of settlements. Intra-linguistic and extralinguistic features were taken into account when naming the settlement, since the first name of the settlement, as a rule, the name was transferred from the original source, i.e. the name that was in Bulgaria. The appearance of these names in Ukrainian toponymy is explained by several reasons: first, the preservation of the Bulgarian names, and secondly, the conscious adaptation of their original names to the peculiarities of the Ukrainian language during their registration by representatives of the authorities.
